Περιγραφή: Facebook Page Description: "Dirty Girls was initiated in October, 2015 by Alison Terry-Evans in reaction to seeing that good quality wet and dirty clothing, discarded by refugees arriving by sea on the island of Lesvos, was being trashed rather than saved and reused. With the gradual involvement of other volunteers, she began collecting the clothes which were initially washed in domestic washing machines until a suitable and sympathetic commercial laundry was found. With huge load capacity in machines operating 24/7 and the hospital standards of the laundry, it then became possible to also launder sleeping bags and UNHCF blankets. Initially it was a challenge to alter the prevailing attitudes which saw the clothes and blankets as easily expendable, but there was a distinct change when the name Dirty Girls was attached to the project and it was promoted as a humanitarian and environmental group with an element of fun in a milieu fraught with distressing emotions. From mid March, 2016, with changes which meant that refugees movements to destinations outside Greece were curtailed, Dirty Girls main focus has been on washing blankets for the 54,000 people in official and unofficial camps in Greece. This has meant that Dirty Girls has contracted a second laundry situated in Athens to serve the massive needs of the mainland of Greece. So far, Dirty Girls has saved about 150 tons of material from landfill. With Dirty Girls recycling blankets rather than UNHCR replacing them with brand new ones, UNHCR has been saved something like a million euros of their donor contributions. At any given time, twelve Greek people have been employed by the laundries contracted by Dirty Girls. The blanket wash is at about three thousand per week but will be increased with added financial support. Mission Dirty Girls collect, wash and redistribute clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, bedding and any other materials in good condition which have been used by refugees arriving, or living in camps in Greece. We show respect for the wellbeing and dignity of refugees, and for the environment. We provide volunteer opportunities and work with commercial laundries employing local people."
